Meet the Director

Alexandra Blaine

Alexandra Blaine is the Orchestra Director at West Springfield High School (WSHS) in the Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) system. With over a decade of experience, she has taught music at various educational levels and has a passion for enriching students' lives through music education. Her ensembles consistently receive superior ratings at state assessments and other performance competitions. Alexandra works hard to strengthen the Orchestra Program, increasing student enrollment and fostering a culture of excellence and community engagement. 

Alexandra holds a Bachelor's Degree in Instrumental Music Education and Certificate in Violin Performance from James Madison University, a Music Industry professional certificate from the Berklee School of Music, and a Masters in Educational Psychology from the University of Virginia. She has worked for the VDOE (Virginia Department of Education) in creating instructional plans, curriculum development, and digital resources. Alexandra has also given masterclasses on both fiddling and improvisation. 

Alexandra is a member of the American String Teachers’ Association as well as VMEA and VBODA. She was the VBODA Regional Representative from 2016-2017, for FCPS Arlington and Alexandria. She was also invited to conduct the 2019 Chesterfield All County Orchestra and served as a performance assessment judge for the 2023 District 2 middle and high school District Orchestra Assessment in Virginia Beach. 

In addition to her work in the schools, Alexandra has performed with the Tysons McLean Orchestra, Washington Sinfonietta and appears regularly in the pit orchestra for musical production at the Keegan Theater in Washington DC. An active member of the DC music community, she plays with countless songwriters, free-lance musicians, and bluegrass bands. She is the fiddler, singer, and songwriter in Two Ton Twig, winner of the 2019 Washington Area Music (WAMMIE) award for Best Bluegrass Album. In spare time, she enjoys hiking, reading, and spending time with her daughter Josie, her dog Bentley, and her husband Jeremy.
